For many young people the property ladder looks like one of those fire escapes you see on the side of New York tenement buildings. It can only be accessed from above. When I was growing up people bought a house to live in, not as an investment. It was a place to set down roots, join a community and perhaps raise a family. It was part of the Great Australian Dream, possibly a money pit but not a money pot. You might upsize or downsize a home depending on your family circumstances but it wasn’t regarded as a way to make a killing.
