Taking legal services to communities

Taking legal services to communities

By Karin Derkley

Bringing together Aboriginal women for a day of pampering and activities is how Djirra, formerly the Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention & Legal Service Victoria, gets its message out about its legal services. Djirra's Sisters Day Out workshops have been held across the metropolitan and regional areas for the past 10 years, giving thousands of Aboriginal women the chance to gather together for wellbeing sessions, find out about support services and prompt conversations about family violence and other legal problems. "We know women won't just walk through our doors. We have to take our services to the women," says Djirra CEO Antoinette Braybrook. "This is about taking our service to communities, where the women can get together and have fun, draw strength from culture and community and access much-needed legal services, as well as get support with a range of other things like counselling, housing, health, and Centrelink issues." Nationally, Aboriginal women are 32 times more likely to be hospitalised because of family violence, 10 times more likely to die of violent assault, 10 times more likely to have children taken and are the fastest growing prison population.
