Last year 52 per cent of complaints about lawyers were consumer disputes involving legal costs. As the Legal Profession Uniform Law’s delegated local regulatory authority in this state, the Victorian Legal Services Commissioner receives all complaints about lawyers, whether from clients, other lawyers or the judiciary. In 2016-17, the Commissioner received 1489 formal complaints; 52 per cent of which were consumer disputes involving legal costs. Most disputes arise from the areas of law where emotions can run high, including family/de facto law and wills/probate/estate matters.
