1st William Ah Ket Scholarship winner says true diversity not just a numbers game

1st William Ah Ket Scholarship winner says true diversity not just a numbers game

By Karin Derkley

The winner of the first William Ah Ket Scholarship, government solicitor Thomas K Abraham, says the way to achieve true diversity in the law is to focus on the benefits that diversity brings rather than seeing it as a numbers game. Singaporean-born Mr Abraham told the audience at scholarship event hosted last night by Maddocks law firm that he had been inspired by William Ah Ket as a pioneer for Asian lawyers in Australia, and also by former High Court Chief Justice Michael Kirby’s exhortation that the legal profession needs to reflect the diversity of the community it serves. The William Ah Ket Scholarship celebrates the achievements of the first Chinese-Australian barrister in Victoria and aims to encourage debate about issues related to equality, diversity and the law. William Ah Ket was the son of a market gardener in Bendigo who went on to share chambers with Sir Robert Menzies.
