Pro bono contribution on the rise

Law firms with a strong pro bono culture tend to have happier, more fulfilled lawyers and lower staff turnover, says Australian Pro Bono Centre CEO John Corker. But while the Centre's aspirational target of 35 hours of pro bono legal work per lawyer across Australia has been achieved on average, some parts of the legal profession are pulling their weight far more than others, Mr Corker says. According to the 10th Annual Performance Report of the National Pro Bono Aspirational Target, 11,795 lawyers provided a total of 420,195 hours of pro bono legal services in the past financial year, averaging 35.7 pro bono hours per lawyer.
