There’s a strange paradox in our world at the moment. “Just the one?” I hear you ask. At a time when cooking shows on television have never been more popular many people, and particularly the young, have almost given up on cooking for themselves. In some households the stove has gone the way of the waffle machine and the fondue set. We’re glued to MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules as well as shows featuring so-called celebrity chefs but the food they dish up is for vicarious consumption only. If we can’t cook a simple pasta dish there’s no hope of us attempting Jamie’s Tuscan rotolo. Spinach, stinging nettles, borage, ricotta parmesan and porcini baked in a tomato sauce. Yum.
