Beyond the legal profession

Beyond the legal profession

By Zoe Chan

Access to Justice Practice & Procedure

Building disputes often need expert help. For many legal practitioners, ensuring access to justice through pro bono work is an ethical obligation – a natural extension of lawyers’ duty to the law. This view has ensured such work is built into the structure of the profession. However, the time is ripe for lawyers to work with other professions to develop and expand pro bono. In recent years, the private sector has become increasingly committed to corporate responsibility. Pro bono is now undertaken by diverse professions. This increase in resources presents opportunities for lawyers to work with other professionals to build a fairer society.
