Regional lawyer to lead Law Institute of Victoria

Regional lawyer to lead Law Institute of Victoria

By LIV Media

Legal Biography

Regional commercial lawyer Belinda Wilson is the 2017 president of the Law Institute of Victoria. Ms Wilson was endorsed at the LIV annual general meeting last night and will take up the position on 1 January.

Having worked in Gippsland as a regional practitioner for most of her career, Ms Wilson has recently established Aligning Strategies, a consulting company predominantly for the food and seafood sector.

Ms Wilson has been a Council member since 2014, and has been involved with the LIV since 2004 in a variety of roles, including past president of the Gippsland Law Association.

In 2011 Ms Wilson was named LIV Regional Lawyer of the Year, and in 2012 was named Victorian Young Property Lawyer of the Year by the Law Council of Australia.

A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Ms Wilson has a strong background in corporate governance. She is a director of the Victoria Law Foundation and sits on the state government’s Fisheries Cost Recovery Standing Committee.

Ms Wilson aims to promote an entrepreneurial approach to practising law. “With my diverse background and a non-traditional career progression in the profession, I hope to inspire others to take a different approach to how they view the law and engage with clients, and challenge current perceptions, while embracing innovation and technology.”

LIV CEO Nerida Wallace thanked outgoing president Steven Sapountsis for his work this year, particularly his support of cultural diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, his work on regulation of lawyers, and his principled stand against mandatory sentencing.

Also joining Council in 2017 are: Tom May of Madgwicks Lawyers, who previously served on Council from 2001-2012, Simon Libbis, who was re-elected, Caroline Counsel, past president and LIV Family Violence Portfolio Chair, Carrie O’Shea of Victoria Legal Aid, and John McPherson of Arnold Dallas in Bendigo.

Ms Wallace and Mr Sapountsis paid tribute to the contribution of retiring councillors Louise Akenson, Cameron Forbes and past presidents Michael Holcroft and Katie Miller.
