Appointments Justice Leadership

The appointment of solicitor and former Minister for Health Jill Hennessy as Attorney-General was welcomed today by the Law Institute of Victoria.

LIV President Belinda Wilson said the LIV was looking forward to working with the new Attorney-General, Victoria’s 54th Attorney-General.

“We congratulate Ms Hennessy and look forward to putting our views on law reform and access to justice to her on behalf of our 19,000 members and the wider community,” Ms Wilson said.

“I would also like to welcome Ben Carroll as new Minister for Youth Justice.

“This is an important appointment reflecting the role of young people in the justice system, which should be focused on rehabilitation, not locking them up,” Ms Wilson said.

She said the LIV had enjoyed a good relationship with Mr Carroll when he was Parliamentary Secretary for Justice and she expected that would continue.

Ms Wilson also thanked outgoing Attorney-General Martin Pakula for his service. “We have always appreciated Mr Pakula’s willingness to consult us on important law reform issues, both in his role as Shadow Attorney and since he was appointed Attorney-General in 2014,” Ms Wilson said.

She said the LIV worked with politicians from all parties, and she also thanked in particular Shadow Attorney-General John Pesutto, Greens Justice spokeswoman, Sue Pennicuik, and Reason Party’s Fiona Patten and for their willingness to consult on legislative proposals.
