Top 10 tips for using LinkedIn

Top 10 tips for using LinkedIn

By Thomas Hobbs

Networking Social Media

Everyone talks about LinkedIn, but using it can be intimidating. Here are 10 tips from recruiter Thomas Hobbs to make the platform work for you. 1. Create an account. Most lawyers have one now and you're missing out on some important information if you're not connected. Employers are increasingly looking at the accounts of future employees in conjunction with their CV. 2. Get a professional headshot. It could be the best $100 (or less) you spend this year. First impressions of an account, at least from my perspective as a recruiter, are formed from a photo so take it seriously. A great profile can easily be ruined by a daggy and/or inappropriate photo. 3. Be accurate. Get your details and dates correct. Misrepresentations in a LinkedIn account will be found out at some stage. 4. Prepare a succinct overview including a snapshot of your career to date and areas of expertise. Don't overplay yourself and, equally, don't underplay yourself. LinkedIn is a marketing tool that promote you and your current organisation. As a lawyer, think of how your profile can appeal to future clients. 5. Prioritise detail. For example, and the same rule applies for your CV, don't go overboard with detail regarding your days in retail as a law student (unless that's your only role). Do provide relevant information reflecting your skills and expertise in your current and/or most significant legal roles. 6. Make an effort to update your account at least every couple of weeks (if not sooner). 7. Celebrate the promotions and achievements of others, as well as yourself (without appearing too self-congratulatory). This can typically be done by liking a post or providing a brief comment for close friends and/or colleagues. You may even contribute a group photo.
