Soft skills are as important as technical skills. During the first few years of practice, tips for young lawyers are ever changing and mostly subjective. Soft skills are personal attributes that you need to succeed in the workplace. Soft skills are as important as technical skills and both will continue to improve throughout your career. Particularly in your first few years, it’s important to keep learning and developing these soft skills to make sure you’re well equipped to deal with challenges your workplace can present, such as firm mergers, redundancies and restructures. Here is a list of the top six skills every lawyer should have in 2018: Marketing Whether you are at a conference with your colleagues or a client function for business development, you need to be able to market yourself. This means that you must know your own personal brand, your skills and your strengths. Are you funny, an expert on sport or up to date on current affairs? Try not to start conversations about your work and instead, find common ground. It’s easier for someone to figure out if you’re a capable lawyer if they can build a rapport with you early.
