Family violence is harmful behaviour that is used to control, threaten, force or dominate a family member through fear. The Royal Commission into Family Violence was established in 2015 after several family violence-related deaths in Victoria. The 2016 Royal Commission made 227 recommendations to transform the way Victoria responds to family violence. MCV is responsible for implementing 26 of those recommendations. Four years after the commission released its findings, MCV has acquitted 19 recommendations with seven still in progress.
Some of these recommendations relate to our Specialist Family Violence Courts (SFVC) which commenced sitting in 2019, as of June 2021 we have six locations including Shepparton, Ballarat, Moorabbin, Heidelberg, Frankston and Online. These courts provide victim survivors and their families access to purpose-built court facilities, including a separate entrance and exit, and a safe waiting area. They provide a specialised operating model and support services, including additional specialist registry staff and applicant and respondent practitioners. These specialist courts mark a major step towards a safer court experience for families living with violence.
